Information for Parents/Carers

We provide a series of careers events and activities as outlined in our Future Ready Careers Programme. These include:

• THRIVE lessons: Progressive lessons for each year group 7-11 based around future careers and employability skills and attributes.
• Opportunities to learn from local market information about industry and regional jobs
• All year group pathways assemblies with Post-16 providers
• Year 8 Take Your Child to Work Day
• Year 9 Somerset Careers & Skills Fair visit
• Year 10 Careers Day & Mock Interviews
• Visits to, or from, local businesses and organisations to inspire and allow students to consider a range of career options
• University visits or talks
• Opportunities for virtual careers sessions and work experience placements

All careers and enrichment activities that students attend are logged onto our careers platform, Unifrog so that students are able to build up their own CV of skills and accomplishments to look at and evaluate.

In Years 10 and 11, students are prioritised for an appointment with Mrs Creed, an independent and impartial careers adviser, who comes into school twice a week. We provide additional careers meetings for our Pupil Premium students. Students in other years can request an appointment with her by speaking to their tutor.

In line with Department for Education (DfE) statutory guidance around Modern Work Experience, Year 10 students have the opportunity to complete a week’s work experience in late June or early July. Students are encouraged to find their own placements using local information and databases of employers, or through their own contacts.

Placements are logged by the student on Unifrog which automatically emails the employer for full Insurance, Health & Safety and Safeguarding information. Parents are then requested to give their permission before the placement is authorised by school. We visit any potential placement providers to assess their suitability prior to the week’s experience should any concerns be flagged.

DfE expectations for Modern Work Experience also state that KS3 or Lower School students across years 7-9 should be offered the equivalent of 1-week ( 5 days) meaningful, structured, progressive work experience activities which can include work shadowing, employer talks, workplace tours, employer-set tasks or group or individual skills and enterprise challenges.
