Design Technology

In Design and Technology, students design and make real products for real people. Working in our Innovation Hub, they use laser cutters, 3D printers and CNC machines alongside traditional tools, and design on screen with software such as 2D Design and Onshape.

Between Years 7 and 9, every student rotates through Engineering, Product Design, Graphics, Textiles, Food and Nutrition and design challenges, with projects that become more ambitious each year, from an acrylic key fob in Year 7 to an electronic lightbox in Year 9.

Along the way, students draw on Mathematics, Science, Computing and Art. They learn to think about materials, sustainability and the needs of the people they are designing for, and to refine their ideas through testing and feedback.

At Key Stage 4, students can specialise in Product Design, Engineering or Food Preparation and Nutrition, leading to pathways from engineering and architecture to catering and product design.
